Date: March 2008 Product Reviewed: Brown Devil Lures Location: Port Mansfield, Arroyo, and further south
Action: First thing noticed about Brown's Devil Eye lures was the impeccable action on the slightest retrieve. The action is by far superior to any I’ve used in the past. Slow retrieve, medium retrieve and a slow bounce off bottom all worked and looked very real.
Colors: Colors used were Avocado, Strawberry and Amber for no particular reason other than they were my preference. Rigged with a 1/16 and an 1/8 ounce twist lock jig head seemed to be the perfect match for these plastics. I had trout and reds hit them, and I almost lost a brand new "first time out" custom rod when it was nearly ripped out of my hands by a large snook.
Quality: The quality of these plastics are also something of a grade above the many others on the market. They hold together much longer than many I’ve used. Line twist was absolute zero and I used 20lbs braid tied directly to the jig head. They cast very well and I never once had a problem with my line twisting back around the tip of my rod as I have with others when jerk type jigging off bottom on slower retrieves. The durability really made them stand out a notch above the rest. If I was asked, what I like the most about the Brown Devil lures, I would have to say the action first and then versatility.
Rating: On a scale of 1-10 I guess I’d have to give them a 9.5 but only because I have since seen their new Solo’s semi suspending bait lineup coming out. I hope they also make the Solo’s in a non suspending lure. I'd also like to see a scent impregnated version come out too..
